Pseudolithos cubiformis is a highly unusual succulent belonging to the Apocynaceae family, known for its stone-like appearance. The plant forms a cube-shaped or irregularly rounded, fleshy body with a rough, slightly granular surface. Its color typically ranges from greenish-gray to olive green with darker mottling, which helps the plant camouflage itself among rocks and dry soil in its natural habitat.

Unlike many other succulents, Pseudolithos cubiformis does not produce leaves. All photosynthesis occurs through the stem, which also serves as a water-storage organ. This adaptation allows the plant to survive in extremely dry and hot environments.

In the wild, the species is native to the arid and rocky regions of Somalia, where it grows very slowly and often remains almost unnoticed among stones. Mature plants may occasionally produce small, star-shaped flowers with reddish-brown to purplish tones. The flowers are known for their strong scent, which in nature attracts pollinators such as flies.

This is a slow-growing but highly distinctive collector’s plant that often becomes a centerpiece in collections of rare succulents due to its remarkable form.

Care

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. It grows well near a southeast- or southwest-facing window, though slight shading is recommended during intense summer sun.

Watering
Water very sparingly. Allow the soil to dry almost completely between waterings. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot.

Soil
Requires a very well-draining substrate, such as cactus or succulent soil with a high proportion of mineral components (perlite, pumice, or lava rock).

Temperature
Thrives at temperatures between 20–30 °C (68–86 °F). It does not tolerate prolonged cold or temperatures below 12–15 °C (54–59 °F).

Dormancy
Growth slows during winter. During this period, watering should be significantly reduced while the plant is kept in a bright and warm location.
